How to use the shift pay calculator

Choose permanent or casual employment, enter your base hourly rate, then add hours for each day. Use the fortnightly roster when week one and week two differ. The result estimates annual income from your average roster and shows weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual pay.

A weekend roster example

At a $30 base hourly rate, eight weekday hours, four Saturday hours and four Sunday hours give $570 gross for a permanent employee with this calculator's default multipliers. For a casual employee, the same roster gives $690 gross. These are before tax and exclude employer super.

Check the rates against your award

This is a general estimate, not an award-rate lookup. For permanent staff it uses 1.25x on Saturday, 1.5x on Sunday and 2.25x on a selected public holiday. For casuals the loading is built into flat rates of 1.25x on weekdays, 1.5x on Saturday, 1.75x on Sunday and 2.5x on a public holiday. These match the hospitality and retail awards, but not every award: nurses and aged care workers, for example, have different weekend rates, and evening and night loadings are not included. See the award pages for details. Your award or agreement may use different penalties, loading rules, overtime, allowances or breaks. Public-holiday selection applies to that weekday across the entered roster. Monthly input represents four weeks, not a calendar month.

Shift pay questions

Can I enter a different roster each fortnight?

Yes. Choose Fortnightly and enter each day in week one and week two. Tax estimates use the average weekly income from that roster, repeated over the working weeks per year.

Does shift pay include casual loading?

Choose Casual to apply flat casual rates that already include the 25% loading. Leave it on Permanent if your base rate already includes loading, otherwise the estimate will count it twice. Check the loading and penalty rules in your award before relying on the result.

Is this the same as the tax withheld on my payslip?

Not necessarily. Take-home pay is an annualised resident-tax estimate divided into pay periods. Payslip withholding, irregular shifts, other income and your own circumstances can change the actual amount. HECS/HELP, super and tax-free-threshold options are available in the calculator.
